Hi, this is Laura Roeder showing you exactly how to use a very cool site called SocialMention to automatically monitor what’s being said about you and your business and anything else you want to look up in social media. So this is a free way to automatically get a constantly updated feed of everything that’s being said about you online. You can do this for anything you want. You can put in your own name, your business name, your product names, your industry, or even your competition.

So the first thing you want to start with is your own name. So here’s my name in quotes. You want to put it in quotes to make sure it’s an exact match, and then there’s a few choices over here. You might want to search more like blogs, networks, bookmarks. You want to go ahead and choose “All” and hit “Search”. And once you do that, you’ll see this page come up with all the mentions about you on the Internet and all sorts of sources like Twitter and Blogher, Technorati, Google Blog, along with a lot of cool interesting stuffs along this side as well.

So now that you have your search, you want to be able to wait – have a wait to view this information without having to do the search every single day. And the way that you do that is an RSS feed. So once you grab the RSS feed, you can add it to a feed reader such as Google Reader or my favorite called Netvibes, and once you put it in your feed reader, you can just go to that page and it’ll be automatically updated. You can create a feed reader with as many of these as you want, so your name, your business name, and all the other things we talked about.

So after you go to SocialMention.com and enter your search terms and hit “Search” this results page, you want to click on this little button that says, “RSS Feed”. That will bring you to a page that looks like this with your RSS feed and all you do is copy and paste the URL of this page and put it into your feed reader.

So this, again, is Laura Roeder letting you know how to use SocialMention.com to come social media for mentions of you and your …

  3. Great video Laura.
Did a search while I was listening to your video and founds tons of stuff I didn’t know about including a great tweet by a European fan who picked up my book on a trip to New York. Never would have found it without your advice.
    Thanks

  4. I just went and did this and it’s cool…but I’m not sure why I would do it other than for curiosity’s sake. (I have 1 negative sentiment:( )

How do I “use” what I find? If it’s useful I want to do it ;)

  5. I used to just use Klout for this kind of purpose, knowing how influential/popular we are does help with our Social media profiles. This should be a great addition to that.

I think we all want to know how well we are doing. Thank God for these sites. :)
