How To Optimize Your Email

Your email signature may seem like a tiny speck of your web presence but in reality its a super-important space that too many people overlook. Every email you send could contain a subtle reminder about special promotions or press.

Why not take a moment right now to create a to-do item on your calendar at the first of every month to update your email signature.

Here are a few ideas of promotions to feature in your email signature:

  • A special offer or discount code
  • Direct link to a key part of your website (for example service list, portfolio, case studies)
  • A great write-up or interview about your company (I had this post linked in my signature for a while.)
  • A plug for your email newsletter
  • Information about an event you’ll be speaking at soon

You should also consider putting your social media profile links in your signature. Or you can steal this fantastic idea from David Kadavy and include just one link with all of that information in one place to avoid a long list. (To give credit where credit is due, David told me that he stole it from Noah Kagan, and I don’t know who Noah stole it from!)

  1. Great Post!

I find that having social network in my signature gives people an opportunity to connect with me later if they choose to. Also, I use a service that’s compatible across all platforms so I have my signature with icons available no matter where I am at.

  2. Great tips Miss Roeder! Attention to detail…I like it.

  3. Wisestamp is a browser extension that does a fabulous job of aggregating your social networks and creating a wonderful signature.

  5. oh and I added a blog post to my email signature

  6. Great tips on adding special promo offers in your signature line. I have my signature line set up, but never thought of updating it. Nice.

  7. Great tip Laura!

I hadn’t thought of adding those ideas to my email signature before…

    Hi Laura,

my daughter just sent me one of your webinars (http://www.creatingfame.com/blog/2010/10/3-steps-to-creating-fame/) and I was so happy with the information I received on it! I am a Humanitarian Photographer, and it is a niche market that I am currently figuring out, I know I will really find your tips useful and I love the delivery!

    Thanks so much. Cate Cameron

  9. Thanks Laura. I’ll never look at that bottom space in my email as expendable again. This is one of those tips that seems so obvious you wonder how the opportunity could be missed!

    Great idea.

  10. Usually, I put a link to Facebook or Twitter in my signature. But I’ve also added a link and title to my latest blog post.

But, at the moment, I don’t have a signature at all. Thanks for reminding me :)
