Google Yourself

What is googling yourself? Don’t worry, it’s nothing naughty! I just mean searching your full name in google to see what comes up. A lot of people seem to feel silly about googling themselves but it’s actually really important to your business! What you find is what potential customers see when they search for you.

Start by going to google.com and searching for your full name “in quotes like this”. Also search for any common mispellings of your name. Take some time to look through what you find – the search will give you a general awareness of what kind of online activity your customers are finding. For example, you might be surprised to find comments you’ve left on other people’s blogs in the search results. If you need more results to boost you higher in the search ranking, you can use what google has already found to guide you in your efforts. If google found it once, they will find it again.

This also can be time to re-evaluate and do damage control – if there’s anything inaccurate or untrue about you, start a conversation with the website owner or leave a civil, respectful comment. If all of the results are about someone different with the same name as you, it’s time to step up your SEO efforts. Even if there’s something you can’t change, it’s good to be aware so that you’re ready to address any issues with potential clients, or do more to differentiate yourself from others with the same name.

    I love your work, esp. Websites That Sell, and some work you’ve done with Marie Forleo.
    I’m a photographer. There’s another photographer who has my name and uses allisonevansphotography as her dot com. Mine is allisonevans dot com. We work in different regions, and though we do photograph similar things (weddings, portraits) our styles are pretty different. But her name often comes up when I’m googled, and people unfamiliar with my work have confused us. Do you have any suggestions of how I can disentangle my brand from her ?

    • This is a great question – my advice would be to put your region VERY prominently on every page your website, and email the other Allison and suggest that she do the same! (Believe me, she’s having the same problem!)

      I just looked through your site for your region just so I could write out the example for this response and couldn’t find where you are located anywhere! This is actaully a huge problem in general, people may want to hire you but give up because they can’t figure out where you’re located.

  2. Thank you so much! Now it’s seems obvious, but it wasn’t until you pointed it out. I put my location on my home page and my contact page. With a template web site, those are the only places I think I can place the info, but I’ll see if I can put it anywhere else, as I figure out if I can add text to this site, too. I’m finding the limitation of a template web site is that I can’t add text where ever I want to – I’ve had to embed it in some photographs, but that won’t be read as content in a Google search. But, that’s another topic.
    I’m going to contact the other photographer who shares my name, as you suggested, too. Thank you again, Laura.
