Lately, you seem to hear talk about social media optimization everywhere you go-and for a good reason! Being a small business owner, it’s important to think about advertising, creating awareness for your business and its costs.

Social media optimization to the rescue! Social media optimization techniques can transform your website from several viewers a day to thousands.

To get you started, here are some of the most common questions our clients ask about social media optimization:

What is social media optimization?
The concept behind social media optimization is simple: implement changes to optimize a site so that it is more easily linked to, more highly visible in search engines such as Yahoo and Google, and more frequently included in relevant posts on blogs, podcasts and vlogs.

How do I optimize my social media activity?
Google sees links from social media, so the social media activity plays a huge part when doing status updates. It’s important to think about keywords used even in status updates.

How do I use social networking sites to drive traffic to my website?
It’s important to constantly link back to your website. You can do this by posting your website on Twitter, Facebook or other social media websites. This drives activity back to your website and isn’t just purely conversational. It’s important to put links to blog posts in as well to encourage social media optimization.

How can I optimize my time using social media?
Your live time on social media should be spent responding to and engaging with others. When people waste a lot of time on social media, they are usually wasting time reading blog posts, reading status updates, etc. But if you are not engaging with people, you are not really getting the marketing value out of your time. You can automate links being sent out over social media, schedule status updates ahead of time, etc. You can save time in social media by only interacting.

What are the best tools for social media optimization?
I like to use HootSuite for social media optimization. HootSuite allows you to automatically send out your newest blog to all social media networks. You can use the HootSuite RSS feature to automatically send out a status update to all of your social networks with a link to your newest blog post.

What exactly is “content sharing” and how do people get to do it?
Content sharing is sharing blog posts, videos, any sort of audio, written or visual content on the web. Content sharing often refers to having shared buttons on your website and those little buttons on your blog posts that say “tweet this” or “share this”. These buttons are important to have for social media optimization purposes to encourage visitors to share your content.

What is social commenting and do I need it on my site?
Social commenting is a way to enable discussion on your website and turn into an interactive social place for people to visit. You can use regular blog comments, you can use a tool such as use LiveFire to make comments threaded. Another popular option is to use Facebook comments on your blog. It’s a good idea to let people comment because it becomes an interactive, social place and allows you to make posts interesting, get discussion going and therefore increase social media optimization.

What WordPress plugins do you recommend for social media optimization?
For social media optimization, I like the “Share This” plugin which allows you to automatically put social media sharing buttons on blog posts. Another one I like is the “Facebook Comments for WordPress” plugin which allows you to to integrate Facebook comments with your WordPress blog.
