Automating Your Social Media: Inside Scoop on Buffer

By now, we’ve established how important social media automation is to help you save time on social media marketing. We’ve hooked you up with deets on Hootsuite, one of our LKR favorite automation tools.

But, Hootsuite isn’t the only tool in the automation shed.

Another website that can be a huge time saver for you is

Just like Hootsuite, you can link up multiple social media accounts on Buffer and then send out updates to each of your accounts from one, streamlined place.

Buffer has one key difference that sets it apart from Hootsuite.

It’s set up like a queue: Instead of entering status updates and then setting a date and time for each one, you simply type in your update and add it to your “buffer.” The update will be sent out at the next appointed time, based on your account settings. The defaults are two daily updates to twitter, and four to your Facebook page or profile.

How does this actually work? For example, if you add 4 updates to your Buffer queue; 2 will go today to twitter at the set times, and two will go out tomorrow at those times. All four will go out today to Facebook at the times you determine.

The nice thing about this is that your updates are staggered – meaning they aren’t delivered at the exact same time to Facebook and Twitter.

There is a convenient bookmark plugin for your browser as well. So, when you’re online and find something cool you want to share with your social networks, no need to copy and paste the link and then go over to Facebook and get lost in your newsfeed! Simply click the “Buffer” icon in your browser’s toolbar and add the link to your buffer to be sent out automatically.

This also helps you stay consistent with how often you post to Facebook and Twitter – ensuring you don’t have one jam-packed day and then three days where you can’t think of anything to say!

I just started using Buffer yesterday. It looks like a great time saver & I love the fact that it seems to have better integration with Facebook & Edgerank than Hootsuite, which I was previously using.

We’ll have to see how engagement is. :)

Also, I recently joined Social Media Marketed so I’m looking forward to learning how to increase engagement & reach across multiple platforms.
I’ve picked up some great tips already from the first video. :-)

  3. Thanks for explaining exactly how Buffer works. I like the idea of being able to set per-designated times, and letting Buffer do the rest.

Hootsuite works well for me, because I like the higher level of control. But I will definitely recommend Buffer to my clients. :)
